Mold Basics

What is Mold?
Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth.

What are some of the common indoor molds?

Cladosporium
Penicillium
Alternaria
Aspergillus

How do molds affect people?

Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation. Some people, such as those with serious allergies to molds, may have more severe reactions. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs.

The key to mold control is humidity control

The use of high volume dehumidifiers allows United Drying to rapidly lower the humidity in any structure of any size. From small portable units to large trailer mounted machines, United Drying has what it takes to get the water out!

Define the source of moisture

Flood invasion rain
Hurricane Flood damage
Indoor Flood pipe burst, leakage, condensation
Roof leak
Broken Hot Water Heater
Etc.

Extract any large water levels using commercial water extraction units

MOLD TESTING

To ensure accuracy and eliminate conflicts of interest, United Drying uses Independent Enviromental Professionals to test for mold type and amount of airborne particles. This testing is also conducted after the remediation to insure structure is returned to it’s pre-loss condition.

Test for moisture levels in the structure and the air

It is unadvisable to try and assess or treat a potential/known mold contaminated structure by anyone other than a certified mold inspector, then a certified mold damage remediator. (see Additional Mold Resources on www.epa.gov/iaq  )

It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent the development of mold growth.

Once the moisture is found and the source has been stopped and fixed >

A United Drying certified mold expert will locate and determine the sources and extent of the mold proliferation. The mold will be classified and then the team will create a clear and concise damage remediation plan.

MOLD REMOVAL

Where possible technicians will attack the mold proliferation using highly concentrated anti-microbrial solutions that kill on contact
A thorough reduction of the moisture levels is critical to prevent the proliferation of the mold and restoring the structure to its original condition without having reconstruct

Note : Absorbent materials (such as ceiling tiles & carpet) that become moldy may have to be replaced

---Dessicant dehumidification combined with commercial air movers properly positioned throughout the impaired location will dryout the structure

Comprehensive Mold prevention, containment and removal is a process that should not be taken lightly. There is a right way to do this experience, knowledge and competence are the deadly combination mold damage certified professionals possess to thoroughly rid the structure of the potential hazard and make sure it stays that way !!
