DAMAGE FLOOD DAMAGE |
|
|
In 2005, newspapers everywhere ran the same headlines: |
|
New Orleans UNDER
WATER ! Katrina causes
widespread flood damage and water damage |
 |
| |
 |
The waters continued to rise in the
aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The levee system, overburdened by the storm surge and
heavy rains, burst pouring water into the city of New Orleans leaving many areas several feet under water. Many other parts of the deep south both along the coast and inland experienced massive flooding. |

|
After the Flood…. What now?........ Recovery! |
|
Once Safety has been secured and
the waters have receded it is time to
take the necessary steps to restore your
property back to as near to it’s pre
storm condition as is achievable. Flood
damage and water damage will be your
number one problem to deal with once any
structural issues have been determined.
If heat and humidity are present TIME to
DRY is crucial to avoid Mold
growth. This is where certified
restoration experts are most valuable!
Our disaster recovery teams will take
over the tremendous burden of the entire
remediation process enabling you to
spend this valuable time dealing with
personal or business issues that
command immediate attention.

Why should you take immediate action when dealing with water damage?
Water is a powerful solvent that can dissolve or deteriorate almost any substance.
Water is not stationary; it will migrate up walls or across floors and cause further damage before it dries.
Mold or fungi can begin growing within three days in a moist environment. Even a small flood or water leak can take weeks to completely dry without the speed of a dehumidification and air movement system.
The longer water saturates sheet rock or particle board, the more likely it is to rot.
The longer water saturates hard wood, the more likely it is to permanently warp.
Watermarks are more likely to remain on some materials like sheet rock, cotton and other natural fibers, and some synthetic cloth the longer the drying process takes.
Bottom line, water is a powerful element that can cause a great deal of damage in a short amount of time to a home or office and its contents.
Mitagtion Vs Reconstruction
The disaster recovery process can be daunting. You are tired, emotionally drained. There are so many issues to deal with at this point and it is easy to take the road of ripping out the damaged property and rebuilding or replacing it. There is a better option that is more cost efficient for the insurers and the insured or the uninsured disaster victim. United Drying’s experts have the advanced technology and the know how to make this happen coupled with deep experience remediating all types of damage. The cost savings can be substantial and usually scales with the size of the disaster recovery project.
The Goal of Restorative Drying
As restorative drying contractors, our goal is to return the structure to pre-loss condition as quickly as possible without causing any additional damage.
Restorative Drying, A true science
The first step is determining the source of the water infiltration and stopping it. Next, a thorough assessment of the affected contents and structure to determine
salvage ability. Throughout this process we must continually evaluate the cost of restoration versus the cost of replacement on each component within the building—from carpet and pad to drywall, baseboards, furnishings and other contents.
United Drying understands that defining the level of moisture contained in the structure is essential for a thorough dry out. A problem well defined is a problem half solved. Our technicians utilize penetrating and non-penetrating moisture meters to determine moisture levels in the structure and in the air. |

Factors considered in determining course of action |
|
|
The Drying Process |
Once the moisture levels have been identified in the differing structural materials, UD technicians then devise a strategy on how to dry the structure. Much of this depends on the type of structural material that is above acceptable moisture levels and accessability to those areas. Truck mounted vacuums remove standing water then dehumidifiers are brought in to remove moisture from the air as air movers direct the then dry air into all corners of the affected structure.
Hot and Humid environments command timely action as Mold can and will flourish if not dried immediately. Extremely wet structures must be attacked with overpowering equipment. Spaces that are not free air flowing must have air pumped in. Areas that receive low amounts of light must be immediately addressed.
|
Size Matters |
Having the proper technology
is essential in the drying
process. For larger commercial
or industrial areas what is
needed are larger more
industrial size pieces of drying
equipment.

Restore it
without reconstructing it
When it comes to a thorough and complete restorative drying process, specialized equipment combined with the extensive training and experience of United Drying’s certified restoration experts are the elements necessary to prevent the health hazards that result from extensive flood and water damage. This restoration method is effective and cost efficient.
Nothing will prevent the environment from becoming hazardous if extensive water or flood damage has impacted a property and too much time passes allowing for things to get out of hand. Time to dry is key. If for some reason that is not possible due to circumstances beyond our control, like a serious hurricane or catastrophe, efforts must then be directed towards Mold Remediation and Mold Removal .
